Wagga heatwave (newspaper)
✅ Genuine newspaper clipping — district heatwave context for the week James Keen died of typhoid at Wagga.
Transcription
Wagga Advertiser, 9 Jan 1896. “The heat wave which set in on Sunday last was experienced in Wagga up to yesterday evening, with but slight diminution of the temperature. On Tuesday the temperature registered 104 degrees in the shade, and yesterday the reading was still higher, 108 degrees being reached. In the evening there were some indications of a change, and it is pleasing to state that shortly before midnight a strong breeze set in from the north-east, which greatly moderated the temperature. At the time of our going to press, however, the sky was still cloudless, giving but slight hope of the pleasant change proving more than temporary. Bush fires are reported from several parts of the surrounding country, and yesterday one broke out on Pomingalaria and consumed a large quantity of grass. Water is, in many parts of the district, fast drying up, and grass is becoming scarce in every direction.”

✅ Genuine newspaper death/medical report — confirms James Keen died of virulent typhoid after admission from a Forest Hill harvesting camp.
Transcription
“JAMES KEEN, another of the typhoid fever patients who were admitted to the hospital from a harvesting camp at Forest Hill, died at the hospital on Sunday last. Notwithstanding the fact that the disease from which the men were suffering was stated to be typhoid, doubts existed in the minds of some persons as to the accuracy of the statement. However, the matter was cleared up on Sunday evening by a post mortem examination made on the remains of the patient Keen, and which placed beyond all doubt that the disease was typhoid in a virulent form. The deceased, who was admitted to the hospital on December 30th, was 48 years of age, and a resident of Forest Hill. He leaves a widow and a family of six children. A man named Richard Butler who was also working at Forest Hill, and procured his drinking water from Kyamba Creek, was admitted to the hospital yesterday suffering from a severe attack of typhoid. The other patients are progressing satisfactorily.”
